POPCO – advanced turbine capable of delivering desired downstream pressure whilst extracting energy from available surplus pressure – offers dynamic pressure management preventing pipe bursts and significant reductions in leakage rates. Conventionally, pressure reduction is achieved by the use of Pressure Reduction Valves (PRV) – transforming energy captured in the pressure to heat – wasted energy as it disperses into the water.
The water sector is highly energy-demanding – consuming some 5% of all electric power generated in e.g. the US. Addressing this in light of the high leakage rates in water distribution systems, the need for measures appear as evident. Electric cars, trains and even elevators regenerate energy from braking. Utilizing surplus power represents a parallel opportunity and should not be missed.
Dual contra-rotating rotors allow a compact design and provide torque-balanced operation – making the POPCO ideally suited for cramped spaces. Rotor speeds are regulated allowing dynamic downstream pressure control – allowing for diurnal variations in water supply.
